Questions and Answers

Does my business need a license to process credit card payments?

Most businesses don’t need a special license just to process debit or credit card payments.

However, regulated industries — like gambling, crypto, forex, and telemedicine — must have the proper licensing before payment processors will approve transactions.

For example, online gaming businesses need a gambling license from a recognized regulatory body, such as Malta or Gibraltar, as well as local licenses if you would like to market in countries where a local license is required.

If you’re in a regulated industry, having the right licenses in place is the first step to securing a payment processing solution. Reach out to our team if you’d like to learn more about licensing requirements for online payments.

Are there any industries that AltoPay doesn’t serve?

AltoPay works with most legal businesses that sell goods or services online.

However, if we determine that AltoPay isn’t the right fit for your business right now, we’re happy to explore solutions in the future as regulations and acquiring partnerships evolve.

If you’re unsure whether your business qualifies, contact us. We’ll review your business plan and let you know your options.

How do I know what my MCC is?

Your Merchant Category Code (MCC) is usually a four-digit code that classifies your business based on the products or services you sell.

You can find your MCC by:

  • Checking with your current payment processor. Your acquiring bank or processor can provide your assigned MCC.
  • Reviewing your VAR sheet. If you have a VAR sheet from a previous integration, your MCC will be listed.

Knowing your MCC is important because it impacts processing rates and compliance. Being classified with the appropriate MCC is vital for your business and necessary to be within card scheme rules.

Let us know if you have trouble locating or understanding your assigned MCC.

We think all businesses should have a chance to succeed — no matter the industry
