RDR: Visa Verifi’s Rapid Dispute Resolution product explained

February 08, 2023

In recent years, e-commerce has rapidly grown, and with it the demand for technological advancement to process digital payments. With the steady rise of online sales, disputes and chargebacks have run rampant, leading to many sellers having to take mitigation measures in order to keep their merchant accounts healthy. Some of these measures including manual processes and 3rd party tools which can be a lengthy, costly process.

To put this in perspective, in May 2020, e-commerce sales grew 81% globally, and along with it, non-fraud chargebacks saw a 25% rise. This presented a new challenge to sellers who previously did not have to worry about dispute ratios.

Visa, through Verifi, rose to the challenge and rolled out Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR) in order to help sellers quickly and effectively resolve disputes and minimize their financial impact when it comes to Visa branded cards. (Mastercard / Ethoca does have a similar product but we will get into that in another blog post)

RDR’s function is to respond to disputes in real time. Sellers can customize how they want RDR to respond to inquiries that meet certain parameters, allowing the issues to be solved at a pre-dispute stage, and subsequently preventing these disputes from escalating into chargebacks.RDR’s function is to respond to disputes in real time. Sellers can customize how they want RDR to respond to inquiries that meet certain parameters, allowing the issues to be solved at a pre-dispute stage, and subsequently preventing these disputes from escalating into chargebacks.

Driven by a robust rule-based decisioning engine, the seller’s pre-dispute is decisioned in real-time based on the seller’s predefined rules.

Example scenario of RDR in action: A seller has determined that fraud disputes under a certain value, e.g. $20, should be typically refunded. The seller will simply define one rule for both fraud disputes in Visa dispute category 10.X – fraud and disputes equal to or less than $20. When a dispute is submitted that is categorized as fraud and is valued at $20 or less, RDR will immediately trigger a resolution, and Visa will notify the acquirer on existing rails to automatically move funds to the issuer for that transaction.

All disputes that do not meet the seller’s criteria will go through regular dispute channels, allowing merchants to have complete control.

RDR is incorporated within Visa issuers’ dispute management platform, Visa Resolve Online (VROL), making issuer participation as simple as opting in for the service.

RDR is available to all global Visa issuers, and to implement it, sellers can contact their Relationship Manager at Alto Global Processing to get started. After successfully enrolling, a customer representative will help set up a set of rules.RDR is available to all global Visa issuers, and to implement it, sellers can contact their Relationship Manager at Alto Global Processing to get started. After successfully enrolling, a customer representative will help set up a set of rules.

Initially, rules will be defined by sellers through a simple rule selection guide provided by a Verifi customer support representative. Once the rules are confirmed, submitted per BIN and CAID and set in Verifi’s system, the seller will go live on the global system.

Some key features:

Real-time data analysis: Visa will provide data to merchants in order to recognize and resolve disputes quickly and accurately, greatly reducing the amount of time and the cost associated with resolving disputes.

Visa makes use of advanced machine learning algorithms, providing merchants with a higher level of accuracy in their dispute process. This ensures only legitimate disputes are resolved and all others are quickly addressed.

This solution will allow sellers to deliver better customer service and preserve brand reputation, and issuers will save time and reduce costs associated with the current, lengthy dispute-solving process
